RAF Warmwell

RAF Warmwell in Dorset, just five miles from the coast, was operational from 1937 to 1946. It was a 10 Group sector airfield and housed a flight from 609 Squadron (main base at Middle Wallop) flying Spitfires, as well as no. 152 Squadron from 12 July 1940, and was Dorset’s only RAF airfield. It came with the heavy responsibility of protecting the nearby naval base of Portland, which often came under attack in the early days of the battle, most notably from Stuka dive bombers.

It was attacked by the Luftwaffe in on several occasions in August 1940.
