The de Havilland DH.88 Comet was a twin-engined British aircraft that won the 1934 MacRobertson Air Race, a challenge for which it was specifically designed. It set many aviation records during the race and afterwards as a pioneer mail plane. The only flying example is based at the Shuttleworth Collection, Old Warden.

You can find recordings of that aircraft here. It is very rare for the aircraft to fly although the aircraft is sometimes taxied at summer airshow events.

The de Havilland DH.100 Vampire was a British jet-engine fighter. The DH.100 Vampire was commissioned by the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, and was the second jet fighter to enter service with the RAF, after the pioneering Gloster Meteor. Although the Vampire arrived too late to see combat during the war, it served with front line RAF squadrons until 1955, and continued in use as a trainer until 1966. The Vampire also served with many air forces worldwide, and set aviation firsts and records.

  • Aircraft tend to use high-bypass turbo-fan engines which are suitable only for subsonic flight flying slower than the speed of sound . These engines optimize fuel efficiency and reduce noise. Military fighter jets use low-bypass, turbo-jet engines which are generally noisier than commercial aircraft engines. Most have after-burners for additional thrust and noise and can fly faster than the speed of sound supersonic or faster than In certain conditions, this can create engines need higher power-to-weight ratios for speed and maneuverability.
